#GreySkies #RoughCut

Adding some gloom into the late night hours of February 2017.

For all of the weirdos, the 3AM thinkers, the outcasts, the rogues.

"The lyrics in this song are amazing; I like that the artist can tell a story, maybe one that we haven't ever heard this way, or at least I haven't but I'm enjoying listening to it".
- Random ReverbNation Crowd Review Reviewer

My latest album, Grey Skies, weaves together a tale of drug abuse, a lack of guidance and lost love over chill beats.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My name’s Matt Dyer, a 25-year-old corporate drone by day and hobby rapper by night.

If you want the music, what I do, to be put in a box…I’d label it as…ex-addict hipster rap, at least for my new free album/mixtape, Grey Skies. While the songs have all been written recently, this is a story rooted in the past. For a project borne of heavy reflection on several poor life choices over the years, regardless, the present seeps in. The embellishment of real events and fictional narrative throughout Grey Skies is littered with a very real and ever-mounting fear of failure.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Anxiety, frustration, and melancholia. Autumn decay drenched in nostalgia.”

There’s a wistful, sometimes even trippy, quality mired in the lyrics. A variety of loops and instrumentation produced by a myriad of producers from across the globe provide an intimately distant vibe. Bits from stand-up comics, cartoons, shows and movies provide pop culture underpinnings to the story.

Let’s be clear -- I wrote Pink Skies first. That’s still happening, once I save enough funds, but it also makes more sense, for the ‘saga’ as a whole, to begin with Grey Skies. There’s a fair amount of allusions to Pink Skies, seeing as that’s been written since 2015, and the reverse is true as well: Pink Skies has a few references to events from Grey Skies. I’m gonna sound like more of a pretentious prick here, but the albums are also presented as alternate timelines with corresponding themes:

Grey Skies is Depression. Pink Skies is Acceptance. Blue Skies is Progression.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“From Dusk to Dawn, wait ‘til I awaken anew.”

Dusk and Dawn, are two accompanying EP’s releasing May 30 and August 15 respectively, which add to the mythos between Grey Skies (2/14 Rough Cut, 2/21 Final) and Pink Skies, releasing October 31.

Track Name: Act II - Grey Skies
(Chorus)
Smoke billows from the Swisher as the clouds roll by
Layin' on this hallowed ground underneath the grey skies
Rain could fall at any moment, no doubt that it might
Layin' on this hallowed ground underneath the grey skies
Smoke billows from the Swisher as the clouds roll by
Layin' on this hallowed ground underneath the grey skies
Rain could fall at any moment, no doubt that it might
Layin' on this hallowed ground underneath the grey skies

(Verse)
I feel it in the air, the odd sense that someone's near
Wonderin' who the fuck God sent to come in here
Typically I'm in my swamp, yellin' til the ops run in fear
Looked up and saw Athena, I was shocked, at once unprepared
What the fuck you want from me, I blurted, what's the purpose
Of your visit from the Heavens down to Mortal Earth? It's
A bit distractin' seein' you n' I know that I'm bein' rude
But I'm a fuckin' ogre, so what do you see in dude?
She replied, demeanor calm, as she gripped me by the arm
"Matt, I sense resentment, but you won't let me see what's wrong"
See what's wrong? See my life, every day I try n' fail
She squeezes tighter, "without the fight n' struggle, why prevail?"
Why prevail? Shit, that's a question that I've never asked
"Happiness is within yourself if you could just forget the past"
Now hold on a second, I can't abandon experience
She shook her head n' sighed, acted like I wasn't hearin' shit

(Verse)
Athena hits me with a steely gaze, "You need to understand
Life is what you make it, you've run the course with your other plans.
You can come back to the world or remain withdrawn from it
But without lovin' yourself you'll never mount the strong summons"
Who the fuck could love a beast? I stay away for everybody's sake
If it ain't talkin' shit then I've got nothin' in common to say
So I aim for the best target n' ostracize myself
From everyone around me who's ever offered help
Your divinity simply doesn't make a difference to me
To be honest I'm surprised you'd even listen to me
I haven't held a conversation this long since I absconded
She shrugged n' said "despite your loneliness, at least you're honest;
I came down from Olympus to make sure that you're safe
There's not too many Mortals who dare enter this space.
I'm here to let you know despite it all, you're a survivor
But this place is your own prison, your decision if you're a lifer."
